Have you ever felt like your emotions are getting the best of you? I've been there so many times!
We are human. God gave us emotions, but they were not meant to consume us. We were created for good works and not for the selfish works of our own flesh. No, I am not saying we are selfish because we feel. There is a divine reason why God lets us feel so much.
I believe for a much greater reason than just how we may feel or can even comprehend. But I think we can all agree sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us. We may not be able to control our emotions but we can choose whether we act on them or let them consume us.
When I feel like my emotions are getting the best of me here are my top 5 ways I realign myself with God’s truth.
1. I go straight into prayer.
I tell God how I feel. Why it’s bothering me. I tell my soul to be quiet. I ask for God to reveal truth and light in the situation. Don’t be afraid to cry out whatever is weighing heavy on you at that very moment. Lay it all at his feet. Ask for him to help you process your emotions and for healing. Nothing is too big for our God!!!
2. Journal.
This may not be for everyone, but I recommend you try it! Writing has always helped me effectively sort through my emotions and a way that God speaks His word through me.
3. Turn on and blast a worship music playlist.
There is something so healing about dropping everything and having your spirit filled with His love. Raise your hands and sing your heart out to our Almighty God. I created a playlist on Spotify of my favorite songs. To be honest, I enjoy a variety of different music genres but 95% of the time I will just listen to worship music. Why? Because when I listen to those songs they don’t do what worship music does for me. They don’t fill my spirit or mind with God’s perfect truth and love or give me peace or remind me of who I am in Christ.
4. Seek guidance and ask for prayer depending on the situation.
I reach out for extra prayers from a trusted brother/sister in Christ or our home church. We were not made to do this life alone! If you are struggling with something right at this moment no matter how big or small, I pray that you release all that weight and allow God to reveal truth in your situation. That you receive peace and healing. God is near my sweet friend.
5. Meditate on scripture.
If I am near my Bible, I will go straight there, but if not, I will type in scripture for whatever it is I’m feeling. Scrolling through scripture graphics on Pinterest really helps too. The following two scriptures really put everything into perspective for me and remind me to always trust and seek God first:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight.” -Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” -Galatians 5:16-17 NIV
Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. Give yourself grace, but choose to live in the Spirit rather than in the flesh. Because of who God and His love is, we can go to Him with anything. He wants to hear from us and guide us. When we live by faith and fix our hearts on His truth our thoughts, emotions and everything can align with Him.
