What Baggage Are You Carrying?

I recently got out of a bad situation I was in. Though I ignored it, even from the start, I could feel the tug on my heart and the silent whisper of the Holy Spirit saying, “This isn’t God’s path, you’re going your own way.” How silly it is, that we, sinful beings, think we somehow know better than the God of the entire universe.

In a sinful world, it is easy to pick up distractions and baggage, all of which hinder us in our walk with God; whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. Maybe like me, you’ve found yourself hanging onto things of this world that are holding you back from pursuing God at your fullest: a toxic relationship, social media, or a reckless party lifestyle. These things hold us back.

To surrender is to let go and trust God, and I've found that sometimes, we cling tightly to things of this world - our plans. The prodigal son we read about in Luke 15:11-22 paints a beautiful picture as we try to grasp surrendering to God; He gave up his old way of life, expectations and desires to run back to God. In doing so, he was met with a great reward, far beyond his expectations.

Similarly, after realizing I had strayed onto my own path, and coming home, I was met with the incredible love of the Father. When I chose to return to God’s path, all the seemingly important baggage I acquired from the world was lifted off my shoulders - the best feeling.

Things of this world hold us back, stopping us from the ministry God has individually called us each to. Whether that be at your workplace, school or any sphere of influence.

If you are feeling weak, overwhelmed or weary, I urge you to stop and evaluate where you are, asking yourself three simple questions:

  1. Am I actively seeking God’s best for my life?

  2. Is my faith and spending time with God my top priority?

  3. Are the things causing me stress or anxiety eternal?

Because two weeks ago, when I paused to reflect, I was deeply convicted.

It should be no surprise the hurt and stress we bring upon ourselves by seeking our will above Gods.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,

and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Seek His plan, follow His path, and rid yourself of worldly baggage.
