Have you ever been in a season of life where you feel like you’re sinking? Drowning? Like the world around you is crumbling, and nothing is going right? Like everything is just a big mess – like YOU’RE just a big mess?

Me, too. More than once.

Here’s the thing about sinking: eventually you hit the bottom. Rock bottom.

The term “rock bottom” often has a negative connotation. It’s a term used to describe what happens when people crash and burn, when they fall off the deep-end, and when they make an absolute trainwreck of their life. But in its simplest terms, hitting rock bottom just means “reaching the lowest possible point”…and sometimes that isn’t such a bad thing.

Hitting rock bottom and reaching the end of ourselves can actually be a really good thing when we find ourselves at the feet of the Rock of Ages.

God is called our Rock over 30 times in Scripture. I would love to share every single one of those verses with you, but for now I’ll just share a few of my favorites:

1 Samuel 2:2 – “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.”

2 Samuel 22:32 – “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?”

Psalm 31:2-3 – “Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;”

Psalm 62:2 – “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”

Isaiah 26:4 – “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”

When God calls Himself our Rock, it’s an image of His unchanging nature and the security provided by His immutability. He is our stronghold and our refuge when the battle rages. He is reliant, dependable, and trustworthy, even when life becomes unpredictable. He is not shaken by the chaos around us. He is a firm foundation, unmoved by even the wildest storm.

When the world is crashing, swirling, shifting around us, He is the one thing that doesn’t move, doesn’t change, doesn’t waver. He is a fixed point, rooted in place. When we cling to Him, we can find peace, security, and stability in the storm.

We can be so quick to turn to other things – friends, social media, food, work, a busy schedule…anything but God – for security, comfort, peace, and refuge, but these things won’t provide what we need because they, too, are tossed by the waves. There is no use clinging to something that is unstable or unsteady. When the floodwaters rise, we will find no safety in grabbing hold of a branch from a tree that is not rooted to the ground. It will be ripped up and swept away along with everything else.

When we think about being “rooted” in the Christian life, we first think of how WE need to be rooted: rooted in Christ, rooted in love, rooted in His Word. But our ability to be rooted as we are called to be is fully dependent on Him and how He is rooted in Himself!

His character is unaffected by the storms. He is not caught off guard or surprised. He doesn’t ever have to change course or come up with a “plan B.” We can cling to Him and who He is, and that is where we will find safety in the storms of life, and we will have no reason to fear.

Charles Spurgeon famously said, “I have learned to kiss the waves that throw me up against the Rock of Ages.” May this be true of us – may we learn to let the waves draw us nearer to our God.

When the storms rage and the waves threaten to pull you under, cling to the Rock that doesn’t move, and find peace. He is the calm in the storm.
