I absolutely love everything that comes with Christmas - Fun parties, church plays, gatherings, ice skating, hot cocoa, and random drives to see Christmas lights. Clearly, we can easily get caught up in the “run, run” of the season.

It's so easy to forget the true meaning, in the midst all of the craziness we may experience this time of the year.

It's easy to get caught up in perfecting the holiday, and all of the events we have planned, when in reality we are forgetting the simple, yet main part of Christmas. The fact that it was just an ordinary, regular night when our savior came to Earth.

There is one word that best describes the night the Lord Jesus was born – ordinary. The sky was ordinary, the stars were ordinary. It was a beautiful night, a night you may like to admire, but not an unusual one. There was no reason to expect a surprise. Shepherds were guarding their flocks like they always did when all of a sudden, an angel of the Lord appeared to them. The angel declared the birth of Jesus, and soon after a multitude of angels appeared, and sang:

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another" -Luke 2:13

Afterwards, in Luke 2:14-16, they said: “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”

This should be our reminder that we do not have to do anything out of the ordinary to “Have a good Christmas." I never want to get so caught up in all of the details and fun festivities, that I forget that God delights in the ordinary.

Especially during the Christmas season. This season is meant to be special, but this special doesn't have to mean perfectly decorated cookies or extravagant trips.

Instead, how about focusing on how grateful we are that God shows up during all things - even the ordinary.
