Each year, people around the world embrace many festivities to celebrate Christmas, one of the most popular being the tradition of gift giving. Although, I’d be lying if I said I didn't enjoy receiving gifts on Christmas morning, I’ve come to know a deeper meaning of one of the most celebrated seasons in our culture, beyond the gifts.
We hear it all the time, but I want to explain it on a more personal level - Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, the perfect gift, not the packages we receive.
Christmas is a celebration of hope, the day Jesus was born, the hope of being saved was given. Jesus came for one thing - to give us the opportunity to know Him in a personal relationship, through dying for us.
“God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Think about it, the perfect gift you got when you were 10 probably isn't that important to you anymore. Why - because the perfect gift CAN’T be found in a store at the mall, experience or even memory you may have this Holiday.
Why do we give and receive gifts then? Because Christmas symbolizes the first day of a long journey that Jesus would go through, His birth symbolized the start of His ministry.
Giving gifts is a symbolic representation of what the wisemen did for Jesus when He was born. The ultimate gift given was Jesus, but we can love others though giving them gifts, to share love and even spread the word of God.
So many of us easily forget the real meaning of Christmas and focus on the material things forgetting that the best, most perfect gift was Jesus, given to humanity over 2,000 years ago in the most humble way - a stable.
The gift of Jesus didn't come in fancy wrapping with a big bow, He was born in a dirty stable. The start of His life was exactly how He would live, in a humble way.
Know that giving and even receiving Christmas gifts isn't a bad thing, the gifts just can’t come first, because material gifts will wear and tear, leaving you tired and exhausting yourself to find what's “new and better.”
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, but a gift from God.” Our faith and God's grace got us saved. This is why gifts are so important because God gave us grace, love and hope.” Ephesians 2:8
This Christmas, share the gift of Jesus with someone who needs His love and saving grace - it's the best gift ever.
